Polished Concrete is a finish that has become very popular, often being written about in architectural, home design and renovation magazines. It is now commonly used in new homes, restoration of older homes as well as in up-market shops and public areas.
In a new home a concrete floor can be laid specifically with a view to being polished. To do this, as the concrete is laid, it can be "seeded" with coloured aggregates, glass beads or something similar and then these are exposed when the concrete is ground after it has cured. After the concrete is ground it is sealed with a clear sealer to give a "wet" look and provide a hard wearing surface.
On an existing floor, whether it's for a house renovation, in a shop display or public area, polishing can bring out the aggregates that were used in the original concrete and give an old floor a modern clean look that is also hard wearing and easy to clean.
